March 2 – 25, 2023
Opening reception: Thursday, March 2, 7–10pm
Viewing hours: Fridays and Saturdays, 12–5pm, or by appointment
Day & Night Projects is proud to present two contemporary artists working in ceramics, Emily Llamazales and Sydney Ewerth, in a duo exhibition: Gloom-Bloom. Both use the nature around them as inspiration, expressed in porcelain and stoneware, as well as epoxy and synthetic materials. Llamazales’s distinctive piece “Blood-Full Lily,” shows two branches that fold together holding a spider web, juxtaposing a fairy-like visual with dark ecological forebodings. Ewerth’s abstract conglomerations—physical mappings of line and shadow—allow for exploration of seriousness in the silly, presenting a humorous front that masks coy, obsessive behaviors. In this exhibition, both artists attempt to evoke the hazy ambiguity of a transient moment and memorialize the possibilities through reimagining.
Gloom-Bloom will open with a free, public reception on Thursday, March 2, 7–10pm., 7–10pm. Viewing hours are Fridays and Saturdays,12–5pm, or by appointment.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Emily Llamazales is a contemporary artist based in Atlanta, GA, graduating with a degree from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art in 2019. As the editor for Burnaway Magazine, and a multifaceted artist, we can see her distinctive style throughout all forms of artistry. Llamazales’s work integrates images, sound, and writing to weave together narratives of imaginative world building, influenced by science fiction, hauntological philosophy, and speculative thinking towards future world building. Llamazales’ past exhibitions include the Working Artist Project Studio Apprentice Group Show, at MOCA GA and Preface at Echo Contemporary Art in Atlanta.
Sydney Ewerth is originally from Atlanta GA, where she earned her BFA from Augusta University then received her MFA from The University of Alabama. After her graduation, she spent six months of her residency at New Harmony Clay Project, located in Indiana. She then moved to Louisville where she was an Artist in Residence, Studio Technician, and Visiting Professor at Indiana University Southeast. She is currently teaching at The University of Iowa as the Iowa Idea Visiting Assistant Professor in Ceramics.
