Day & Night Projects is proud to present and love was a burning fence about my house, a solo exhibition by Atlanta artist Makeda Jean Lewis. Through drawing, collage, and sculpture Lewis documents her navigation of sociopolitical friction and decline through an understanding of the erotic as power. Mussel shells drown in milky cast resin lavatory sinks; lovers’ arms pulse with a smoky purple ink on paper. Working through themes set out by pioneering writers Audre Lorde and June Jordan and buffered by critical memes, Lewis’s intimate style foregrounds quiet moments of vulnerability, passion, and grief. And then a plot twist, as the silence is transformed through an auditory sculpture—the sound casts the way forward even as it tells how we got here.
and love was a burning fence about my house will open with a free, public reception on Thursday, Oct. 24, 7–10pm. Viewing hours are Fridays and Saturdays, 12–5pm, or by appointment. Makeda will give an artist talk at our closing reception + oyster bar on November 16 (stay tuned for details).
